Rent a Kimono for a D.I.Y. Photoshoot in Japan

Known as the national dress of Japan, the kimono is absolutely gorgeous. Available in a large variety of prints, the kimono is often worn with an obi (broad sash), together with sandals and white socks. Many ryokans offer the yukata for their guests, which is an informal type of kimono; however, if you’re after the real thing, why not rent a kimono for an afternoon?

Indeed, kimono rental is one of the most popular things to do in Japan — especially in scenic areas like Asakusa in Tokyo, Higashiyama district in Kyoto, or Arashiyama bamboo forest. Plus, the whole experience can even be as affordable as $30 per person!

Make a whole day out of it: the kimono rental usually comes with basic hairstyling plus a simple hair accessory, and a handbag to place your valuables in. If you’d like to go all out, top up for make-up service, professional hair styling, or even if you want a professional photographer to follow you around and snap some amazing shots.

Otherwise, it’s easy to conduct a D.I.Y. photoshoot too.

To add to the experience, go on a rickshaw ride. You can choose to rent the kimono for a few hours or even for the whole day — it’s entirely up to you. In fact, in Kyoto, you can even choose to don the traditional white geisha face makeup.

And yes, there are kimonos for guys too! What better way to commemorate a girls’, friends’, couples’ or family trip to Japan?
