Moomin Bakery & Café: Dine at Japan’s Anti-Loneliness Themed Café

Japan has a strong solo culture, and it shows. Restaurants are often decked out with seats for one, with chains such as Yakiniku Like even upping the ante with meals designed specially for solo diners.

To sweeten the deal, the Moomin Bakery & Café takes it one step further by offering diners their very own fluffy companion to dine with!

Dubbed Japan’s Anti-Loneliness Café, the Moomin Bakery & Café gives diners a large fluffy stuffed toy to enjoy their meal with. For the uninitiated, the Moomins are characters created by Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson, and look much like hippopotamuses. Besides the iconic hippos, the café also has large stuffed toys of the other characters in the comic, such as Little My.

The food and drinks are Moomin-themed as well! Taste-wise, it’s nothing to shout about — but no one’s really at such cafés for the food anyway.

The hippopotamuses are naturally the highlight — be sure to request for one when you visit.

The café is decked out in cute Moomin-themed decor too, with lots of Moomin-related snacks and merchandise to snag home.

The Moomin Bakery & Café is located in Hakata, Fukuoka, within the Canal City shopping complex. So, will you visit this Anti-Loneliness themed café? Japan really has thought of everything, huh!
