Visit the Famous Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, Japan

The atmosphere is hushed, and rays of dappled sunlight streak through the overhead canopy. The whole experience feels magical, surreal, and incredibly peaceful — or at least it will be, before 8am on any regular day.

The bamboo forest in Arashiyama is one of the most popular places to visit as a half or full day trip from Kyoto, drawing large crowds at any time of day. If you wish to enjoy the bamboo forest all to yourself, your best bet would be to visit either before 8am or after 5pm. However, is it still worth a visit despite the crowds? We vote a resounding yes!

You’ll find some parts of the forest to be lined with a barrier of sorts made out of dried grass, whilst other parts will allow you to access the bamboo directly. Some sections go as wide as a road, whilst other parts are narrow. In fact, the deeper you go, the fewer crowds you’ll encounter. All in all, the path stretches over an approximate 500 metres.

Don’t forget to look up too! Close your eyes and listen to the sound of the bamboo rustling in the wind. Fun fact: this sound is one of the “100 Soundscapes of Japan”, which is an initiative by the Japanese Ministry of Environment to encourage locals to stop and enjoy the sounds of nature.

At the back of the bamboo forest, you’ll come across the picturesque villa of Okochi Sanso, a renowned Japanese actor. The grove is also near Tenryuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can even hop on a rickshaw tour that includes the bamboo forest and the surrounding area.

There’s lots to do in Arashiyama; we recommend spending at least a day here. Combine your visit to the bamboo forest with the Iwatayama Monkey Park, kimono forest, Sagano Scenic Railway, or a 2-hour Hozugawa River boat ride.
